Berlin is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and for good reason. From the heights of the TV Tower to the historic depths of the Museum Island, there is something for everyone. However, popularity breeds waiting times. During peak season (and even on sunny weekends in February), lines for major sights can stretch into hours, eating away at your precious vacation time.
The good news? With a little bit of strategic planning, you can skip long lines in Berlin almost entirely. In this guide, we’ll share the exact methods used by locals and savvy travelers to bypass the crowds and walk straight into the city's top attractions.
Before we dive into the "how," let's look at the "where." Some attractions are notorious for their queues. If you just show up at these spots without a plan, you are likely to lose half your morning:
The era of "walking up and buying a ticket" for a major site is effectively over in Berlin. Almost every major attraction now offers—or requires—online time-slot bookings. By booking Berlin skip-the-line tickets online, you aren't just buying entry; you are buying a specific time to enter, which often has its own dedicated (and much faster) entrance.
Peak travel hours in Berlin are 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. If you can visit at 09:00 AM (opening) or after 5:00 PM (late entry), your experience will be significantly better. Many attractions, like the TV Tower, offer early-bird or late-night discounts that also coincide with lower crowds.
If you plan to see 3 or more museums or attractions, a Berlin WelcomeCard or a Museum Pass can be a lifesaver. Note that some passes still require you to book a free time slot online, so always read the fine print!
You cannot simply walk into the Reichstag. You must register online at the official Deutsche Bundestag website weeks in advance. If you missed out on a slot, a guided tour of the Government District often includes dome access as part of a group booking, which can be a great "Plan B."
Standard tickets at the TV Tower involve two waits: one for the ticket booth and one for the elevator. A "Fast View" ticket allows you to bypass the booth and gives you priority for the next available elevator slot. It’s worth the extra few Euros.
Don't buy individual tickets for each museum. Buy the Museum Island 1-Day Pass. This doesn't automatically skip the security lines, but it saves you from waiting at five different ticket counters. Always check if the Pergamon Museum is open, as it is currently undergoing long-term renovations!
| Attraction | Average Walk-up Wait | Pre-booked Wait |
|---|---|---|
| TV Tower | 60 - 90 Minutes | 5 - 10 Minutes |
| Pergamon Museum | 45 - 60 Minutes | 5 - 15 Minutes |
| Reichstag Dome | (No Walk-ups allowed) | 15 - 20 Minutes (Security) |
| River Cruise | 20 - 30 Minutes | 5 Minutes |
Time is the most valuable currency when you are traveling. By taking 20 minutes to book your tickets from home, you can save 4–5 hours of standing on concrete sidewalks in Berlin. Focus on your experience, not the back of the head of the person in front of you. Plan ahead, book your fast-track tickets, and enjoy the best of Berlin without the wait!
