Days with large temperature differences are typical for spring and autumn in Germany. In the morning on the way to work, you need a thick jacket; at noon, you're sweating in the sun in a T-shirt. Being dressed incorrectly on such days is not only uncomfortable but can also lead to colds. The solution is the layering principle (Zwiebelprinzip).
The layering principle is the perfect strategy for transitional weather. Instead of one thick jacket, you wear several thin layers that you can put on or take off as needed.
A perfect layered outfit for an autumn day (Morning 5°C / 41°F, Noon 18°C / 64°F):
In the morning:
Even if the sun is already shining, don't be fooled. The air is still cold. Wear all layers and the scarf. It's better to start a little too warm and then undress than to be cold.
At noon:
Now it's time to shed layers. Open your jacket or take it off completely. The sweater can also be taken off. Be careful not to get sweaty and then sit in the shade, as this can lead to rapid cooling.
In the evening:
As soon as the sun sets, temperatures drop quickly again. Now it's important to have the discarded layers handy again. Put your jacket and sweater back on in time before you get cold.
