"Weather for Pets: Tips for when it's cold, hot, or wet"
Just like us, our pets are affected by the weather. They can't tell us if they're too hot or too cold, so it's our responsibility to ensure their safety and comfort. Here are the most important tips for dogs and cats in different weather conditions.
In Heat: Preventing Overheating
Dogs and cats cannot sweat as effectively as humans. They regulate their temperature mainly through panting and through their paw pads.
- Never leave them in a car: Not even for "just 5 minutes." The temperature inside a car can reach life-threatening levels within a very short time.
- Adjust walks: Walk your dog in the cooler morning and evening hours. Avoid the midday heat.
- Asphalt test: Place the back of your hand on the asphalt for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Stick to grass or forest paths.
- Water & Shade: Make sure your pet always has access to fresh water and a shady spot.
In Cold and Snow: Protection from Frostbite
Even though many animals have thick fur, they are not immune to the cold, especially on their paws, ears, and nose.
- Short walks: Keep walks short in severe frost and watch for signs of freezing (shivering, walking slowly).
- Paw care: Road salt can attack and be painful for paw pads. Rinse the paws with lukewarm water after a walk and apply paw balm if necessary.
- Coats for certain breeds: Dogs with short fur, no undercoat, older or sick animals can benefit from a warming coat.
- Keep cats indoors: In severe frost or blizzards, even outdoor cats are better off staying inside.
In Rain and Wet Conditions: Comfort and Health
A wet coat can quickly lead to hypothermia, especially in windy weather.
- Dry thoroughly: Dry your dog thoroughly with a towel after a walk in the rain, especially on the belly and legs.
- Raincoats: For dogs that hate rain or get cold easily, a raincoat can make the walk more pleasant.
- Visibility: On gray, rainy days, light-up collars or reflective harnesses are a good idea to increase your dog's visibility.
By keeping an eye on the weather forecast, you can adapt your pet's routine and ensure it stays healthy and happy through all seasons.
