Whether for commuting, a sports tour, or a family outing, cycling is extremely popular in Germany. But the weather can significantly affect the enjoyment of riding. With the right planning and gear, every ride becomes better and safer.
More than rain or cold, the wind is the cyclist's greatest adversary. A strong headwind can double the perceived effort and halve your speed.
Rain doesn't have to be a deal-breaker, but it requires adjustments.
Heat:
Schedule long tours for the cooler morning or evening hours. Take at least two water bottles and know places along the route where you can refill water (e.g., cemeteries). Sun protection (cream, glasses) is essential.
Cold:
Protect your extremities! Good gloves, warm socks, and shoe covers are most important. A windproof jacket over several thin layers (layering principle) keeps your core warm. Remember a hat under your helmet.
For perfect planning, the hourly forecast is your best tool. Find the dry window between two rain showers, avoid the peak midday heat, or make sure you're home before dark and cold set in. Good preparation makes the difference between a grueling ordeal and a fantastic bike ride.
